Police Arrest Suspected Child Trafficker After Alleged Sale of Friend’s Child for ₦1.3m

Police have arrested a suspected child trafficker in connection with an alleged network of child traffickers in Nigeria who allegedly exploit children for financial gain.

The suspect, Sunday Onome, was arrested in Onitsha, Anambra State, with his girlfriend and son during an operation by the Inspector-General of Police Special Team on the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU). The operation was based on intelligence that the group was involved in the alleged trafficking of children, police said.

Onome confessed to investigators during interrogation to being involved in child trafficking and that he was paid by people involved in the alleged network. Police are still investigating to find other suspects and to determine the extent of the operation.

The case has brought new worries to the table regarding child protection from networks of trust, poverty and vulnerability. Community awareness and early reporting are critical to stopping trafficking, as it is often traffickers exploit children through familiar relationships and financial incentives.

During the operation, two children were rescued and are being supported to ensure their safety and wellbeing, authorities said.

The development underscores the importance of enhancing safeguarding measures, strengthening inter-agency and child protection coordination, and raising public awareness to prevent children from being separated from their families and subjected to exploitation.
