Three Nigerian Child Prodigies Take on 150 Countries at Prestigious STEM Olympiad

Three Nigerian students are currently competing at the Grand Finale of the International STEM Olympiad in Rome, Italy, in a development that highlights both academic excellence and the importance of children’s right to education and development.

The students, Egejurum Onyedikachi Ethan (11), Onwubiko Chimduebube Victor (13), and Don Anele Munachimso Marvelous (17), are representing Nigeria in Mathematics and Science competitions involving participants from more than 150 countries at the Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma.

Their participation followed strong performances at the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad, which drew over 11,500 contestants across Nigeria. The initiative was organised by education advocate and Educare CEO, Alex Onyia, who also sponsored their travel, accommodation, and participation costs.

From a child rights perspective, their journey underscores the importance of access to quality education, talent development, and equal opportunities for children to compete globally regardless of background. Child rights advocates note that exposure to international academic platforms strengthens cognitive development, confidence, and future career pathways for gifted learners.

The development also draws attention to ongoing concerns about limited institutional support for Nigeria’s participation in global academic competitions, with education stakeholders warning that many gifted children are unable to reach their full potential due to funding gaps and systemic constraints.

Despite these challenges, the Nigerian students have already drawn attention for their dedication and composure on the global stage. Their participation has been widely celebrated as a symbol of what becomes possible when children are given structured academic support and encouragement.

Education stakeholders describe their presence in Rome as more than a competition — but a reminder that every child has a right to education that extends beyond the classroom into global opportunities.

Results from the Olympiad are expected in the coming days, but for many observers, the students have already made Nigeria proud.
