Tinubu Reshapes Education Sector as New Appointments Impact Schools, Exams and Learning Systems

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a series of leadership changes across key education institutions in Nigeria, a move that carries implications for children’s right to quality education and proper development.
The appointments span the National Examinations Council (NECO), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam, and the National Library of Nigeria. Officials say the changes are aimed at strengthening governance, improving institutional performance, and supporting ongoing reforms in the education sector.
Prof. Modupe Adeola Adelabu has been appointed Chairman of the NECO Governing Board, while Prof. Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi has been retained as Registrar. NECO plays a critical role in national examinations that directly affect students’ academic progression and access to higher education.
At the NBTE, Prof. Babatunde Salako has been named Chairman, alongside the reappointment of Prof. Idris M. Bugaje as Executive Secretary. The board oversees technical and vocational education, which is central to equipping young people with practical skills for future employment and development.
In the tertiary education sector, Engr. Dr Bongfa Binfa has been appointed Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam. His leadership will guide institutional development and training opportunities for students in technical fields.
Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi has also been reappointed as Director-General of the National Library of Nigeria. The institution supports learning, literacy, and access to knowledge resources, which are essential components of children’s educational development.
From a child rights perspective, these appointments are significant because education systems directly influence a child’s ability to learn, grow, and reach their full potential. Leadership decisions at these institutions affect curriculum quality, examination standards, access to learning materials, and the overall environment in which children are educated.
The restructuring is expected to strengthen education delivery systems and support the broader goal of ensuring that children across Nigeria have access to stable, well-managed, and development-focused educational opportunities.
