Trafficking Crackdown: NSCDC Frees Toddler, Pregnant Women, 21 Others in Badagry Operation

The rescue of 24 people from a suspected human trafficking camp in Badagry, Lagos State, has drawn attention to the need for stronger measures to protect children and other vulnerable persons from exploitation and abuse.

Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) rescued 16 males, seven females, and a toddler during a raid on a building in Itoga, Badagry. Authorities also arrested three suspects, while two others remain at large.

Among those rescued were two pregnant women and a one-and-a-half-year-old girl. According to the NSCDC, the women became pregnant while being held at the facility. The presence of a toddler among the affected persons has heightened concerns about the safety and well-being of children caught in trafficking networks.

The NSCDC said the suspects allegedly confined the affected persons, manipulated them, and forced some to contact relatives to request money under false claims of kidnapping or accidents. Investigators further stated that several of the affected persons had been separated from their families for months and, in some cases, years.

Officials noted that many of the affected persons appeared unable to clearly remember where they came from or how they arrived at the facility. This situation may complicate efforts to reunite them with their families and support their recovery.

Child protection advocates have consistently warned that trafficking places children at risk of neglect, exploitation, violence, and family separation. Such experiences can have lasting effects on a child’s physical, emotional, and social development.

The NSCDC has called on families searching for missing loved ones to come forward with relevant information. Authorities said ongoing profiling and investigations will help identify the affected persons and reconnect them with their relatives while ensuring they receive the support and protection they need.
