UBEC Moves to Transform Public Schools as Millions of Learning Materials Flood Nigerian Classrooms

The Universal Basic Education Commission (Universal Basic Education Commission), in collaboration with the Federal Capital Territory Universal Basic Education Board (FCT UBEB), has commenced the distribution of teaching and learning materials to public basic schools in the Federal Capital Territory.

The initiative, flagged off on Thursday in Abuja, is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen basic education delivery and improve learning outcomes across public schools.

Speaking at the ceremony, UBEC Executive Secretary, Dr Aisha Garba, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring access to quality and inclusive education for all Nigerian children, describing education as the foundation of national development.

She said the intervention is part of UBEC’s nationwide programme aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing teacher capacity, and providing essential learning resources to support classroom instruction.

According to her, more than 10,000 classrooms have been constructed nationwide under UBEC interventions, while over 400,000 teaching and learning materials and seven million core textbooks have been distributed to schools across the country.

“This initiative seeks to ensure that every Nigerian child receives quality education, and is empowered with the necessary tools to improve learning outcomes and compete globally,” she said.

Dr Garba also disclosed that over 500 teachers have benefited from capacity-building programmes designed to strengthen instructional delivery in basic schools.

She further emphasised that the collaboration between UBEC and state education boards remains crucial in addressing gaps in access to quality education.

The Emir of Jiwa, Alhaji Idris Musa, who was present at the event, commended UBEC for its continued support to the education sector and urged that the materials be properly utilised to avoid diversion.

The programme is part of broader efforts to improve learning conditions in public schools and advance Nigeria’s commitment to quality basic education for all children.
