Rochelle Adams, an Indigenous advocate from northeastern Alaska, highlighted a cultural dilemma due to diminishing Yukon River king salmon runs. In Gwich’in language, July is traditionally known as Łuk choo zhrii, meaning “the month of king salmon,” which now raises questions about its relevance if salmon harvesting is restricted. To address changing environmental conditions due to climate change, Adams and language scholar Annauk Olin are collaborating on a project to compile a glossary of Indigenous environmental terms. This initiative, led by the Alaska Public Interest Research Group (AKPIRG) Language Access program, aims to preserve traditional knowledge amid evolving environmental challenges.
