This year, she chose to use traditional paper copies and colored folders for her students, preferring a break from the screens they use so much. Esslinger is one of Alabama’s few educators with over 50 years of experience, a number dwindling as many teachers retire after 25 or 30 years, especially following the pandemic. Veteran teachers like Esslinger and Susan Gaines, who has taught for 51 years, face increasing challenges but remain crucial for student achievement and mentoring younger teachers. Their extensive experience benefits both students and the broader community.
