The Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) acknowledge that the new co-requisite requirements for the NCEA qualification have increased administrative work for schools. Recent results from NCEA co-requisite tests in reading, writing, and numeracy showed mixed student achievement:
- Numeracy: Only 45.6% of students met the requirement, a decline from the previous year.
- Reading: Nearly 58.7% passed, showing slight improvement from last year.
- Writing: Achievement improved slightly to 55.7%.
Secondary Principals’ Association vice president Louise Anaru expressed concern about the results but noted it is expected given the new, more challenging NCEA qualifications. NZQA deputy chief executive Jann Marshall observed better performance in reading and writing compared to numeracy. Anaru recommended faster assessment marking and better feedback to enhance learning and prepare students for future tests.
