Education in Nigeria and Across Africa: A Critical Analysis on the International Day of Education

Education is a universal right, enshrined in various human rights instruments, and a cornerstone of sustainable development. However, across Africa, millions of children face barriers that prevent them from accessing quality education. On this International Day of Education, as we reflect on the theme, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” it is imperative to examine the state of education in Nigeria and the broader African continent, acknowledging the persistent challenges while envisioning transformative solutions.

The Dire State of Education in Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rates of educational exclusion globally. According to UNESCO, an estimated 98 million children in this region are out of school, accounting for a substantial portion of the world’s 244 million children and youth without access to education. Even for those who manage to attend school, the quality of learning is often alarmingly poor. Many children leave school without acquiring basic literacy and numeracy skills due to underfunded education systems, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of trained teachers.

Nigeria: A Microcosm of Africa’s Education Crisis

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, exemplifies the educational challenges facing the continent. With 20 million out-of-school children, the country bears the unenviable title of having the highest number of such children globally. Contributing factors include:

1. Conflict and Insecurity: In Northern Nigeria, insurgency by groups like Boko Haram has devastated the education sector, leading to the destruction of schools and the displacement of students and teachers.
2. Economic Barriers: Many families, especially in rural areas, cannot afford school fees, uniforms, or learning materials, forcing children into child labour or early marriage.
3. Gender Disparities: Girls are disproportionately affected, often pulled out of school to perform domestic work, care for siblings, or marry young. This perpetuates cycles of poverty and inequality.
4. Infrastructure Deficits: Overcrowded classrooms, lack of water and sanitation facilities, and inadequate teaching resources characterize the educational environment in many parts of Nigeria.

Education in Crisis-Affected Nations

The situation is equally bleak in other crisis-hit countries. Sudan is grappling with one of the worst education crises following a conflict that displaced 18 million children from school. In Ethiopia, conflict, drought, and poverty have left 13 million children out of classrooms. The Democratic Republic of Congo faces a similar plight, with children often forced into labour due to exploitative economic interests. Collectively, these challenges undermine the continent’s future prosperity.

The Socio-Economic Impact of Educational Exclusion

The consequences of Africa’s education crisis are far-reaching. Poor educational outcomes stifle economic growth, exacerbate unemployment, and perpetuate cycles of poverty and inequality. Without quality education, millions of children are denied the tools needed to improve their lives and contribute to societal development. Moreover, lack of education fuels social issues such as child marriage, recruitment into armed groups, and gender-based violence.

The Role of Human Rights Frameworks

To address these challenges, it is essential to operationalize the promises of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, both of which enshrine the right to education. These frameworks advocate for inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all children, regardless of their circumstances. However, the realization of these rights requires robust political will, adequate funding, and collective global action.

Africa’s education crisis cannot be resolved without significant investment. Governments across the continent must allocate at least 20% of national budgets to education, as recommended by international frameworks.

Key areas for investment include:

1. Infrastructure Development: Building and rehabilitating schools to ensure safe and conducive learning environments.
2. Teacher Training and Recruitment: Addressing teacher shortages and improving the quality of instruction.
3. Technological Integration: Leveraging technology to expand access to education, particularly in remote and underserved areas.
4. Gender-Sensitive Policies: Promoting policies that ensure girls have equal access to education, including scholarship programs and safe learning environments.

The Role of Technology and AI in Education

As we embrace the 2025 theme, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” it is important to explore how technology can bridge gaps in education while ensuring it does not widen existing inequalities. For Africa, this means investing in digital infrastructure, training teachers in the use of AI tools, and developing localized content that reflects the realities of African students.

Despite the daunting challenges, education remains the most powerful tool to transform Africa. For millions of children across the continent, education is not merely a pathway to employment but a lifeline to safety, dignity, and hope. On this International Day of Education, the global community must renew its commitment to the right to education and work collectively to ensure that no child is left behind.
