A powerful 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Marmaris, in southwestern Turkey, early Tuesday morning, claiming the life of a 14-year-old girl and injuring dozens as residents scrambled for safety.

According to Turkey’s AFAD disaster agency, the quake occurred at 2:17 a.m. local time (2317 GMT Monday), about 10 kilometers off the coast of Marmaris. The tremor was also felt in Greece and as far away as Egypt, causing panic in several coastal communities.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed on social media that the young child, Afranur Gunlu, died after suffering a panic-induced medical emergency in Fethiye, roughly 100 kilometers east of Marmaris. She was taken to the hospital but could not be saved.

Yerlikaya also reported that around 70 people were injured during the quake, many while attempting to flee buildings, with some jumping from heights in fear. Fourteen individuals were treated at the scene, eight were discharged after brief treatment, and 46 remained hospitalized as of Tuesday morning.
