FCT Teachers’ Strike: Wike Intervenes with Bailout Plan

For over two months, primary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been on strike over unpaid wages, denying students their right to education. On Monday, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) threatened to stage a protest on July 2.

However, the protest was shelved after NANS leaders were invited to a meeting by the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters.

Following the intervention, NANS held further talks with the Chairman of the House Committee on the FCT and later met with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who clarified that salary payments for primary school teachers fall under the jurisdiction of local councils due to the FCT’s full local government autonomy.

To address the crisis, Wike proposed a bailout plan, under which the FCTA would cover 60% of the outstanding salaries, while the six area councils would contribute 40%.

After the arrangement failed to produce results, Wike withheld the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the councils for May and June, intending to use the funds to cover the councils’ share of the payments.

NANS confirmed that the withheld council funds are expected to be released before the end of the week, and emphasized its commitment to monitoring the situation closely to ensure that students can return to school without further delay.
