The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has announced the closure of 22 unaccredited Colleges of Education in a nationwide crackdown on illegal tertiary institutions.

Although the names of the affected schools have not yet been made public, the NCCE disclosed that these institutions failed to meet the commission’s required standards after a comprehensive personnel audit and financial monitoring exercise conducted in all 21 federal colleges of education.

This decisive action follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to clamp down on “certificate millers” undermining the credibility of Nigeria’s education sector. Speaking at the 14th Convocation Ceremony of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja, the President stressed the need for the NUC, NBTE, and NCCE to collaborate in eliminating illegal higher institutions.

Tinubu, represented by Rakiya Ilyasu, Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting the integrity of the nation’s academic system.

He further assured that the NYSC, JAMB, NUC, NBTE, and NCCE are working together to safeguard Nigeria’s education space and ensure that cases of forgery, fake certificates, and unrecognised schools are eradicated.

The Right to Education is a fundamental human right, and every Nigerian child deserves access to quality, credible, and recognised learning opportunities. By shutting down illegal institutions, the government is taking a bold step to protect students from exploitation and to restore confidence in the education system.
