Haitian Student Makes History in Paris, Wins Global Public Speaking Crown and Spotlights Youth Education and Voice

PORT-AU-PRINCE — The recent victory of 21-year-old Haitian student Abigaïl Alexandre at the 2026 Eloquentia International public speaking competition in Paris has drawn attention to the role of education in advancing children’s rights to participation and development.

Alexandre, a native of Jacmel, emerged winner among 2,400 participants from around the world, becoming the first Haitian to secure the global Francophone public speaking title. Her performance, centered on the theme of artificial intelligence and inequality, was delivered before an audience of nearly 4,000 spectators, showcasing not only her oratory skills but also the opportunities that structured educational platforms can provide for young people.

From a child rights perspective, her achievement underscores the importance of access to education that goes beyond classroom learning to include spaces where children and youth can express opinions, engage in debate, and develop critical thinking skills. Such opportunities are seen as essential for fostering confidence, civic awareness, and personal development.

Alexandre’s progression from winning the national Eloquentia competition in Haiti in 2025 to representing her country on the international stage reflects the value of inclusive educational pathways that identify and nurture talent at the local level. Organizers of the competition and supporting institutions in Haiti have been credited with helping create an environment where young voices can be heard and developed.

Her success is also being viewed as a broader symbol of Haitian youth potential, reinforcing the idea that when given access to quality education and participatory platforms, young people can contribute meaningfully to global conversations while advancing their own intellectual and personal growth.
