Junior School Student Dies at Federal Government College, Ikot Ekpene, After Alleged Bullying, Raising Child Safety Concerns in Schools

Concerns have intensified over safeguarding lapses at the Federal Government College in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, following the death of a 12-year-old Junior Secondary School student, Ufokobong Edwin Godwin, who was reportedly subjected to physical assault by a senior student over a dispute involving personal provisions.

According to accounts from students and parents, the incident occurred within the school hostel when a Senior Secondary School student allegedly attacked the younger child after he refused to give up his belongings. Witnesses said the senior student struck the child, including blows to the neck, after which the child reportedly lost consciousness multiple times before other students raised an alarm.

The incident has been widely described by stakeholders as a case of unchecked bullying within a boarding school environment, raising concerns about the effectiveness of supervision and the enforcement of discipline among students. From a safeguarding perspective, boarding schools are expected to maintain strict monitoring systems to prevent peer-to-peer violence, particularly in hostel settings where children spend extended periods under institutional care.

Following the incident, the child was reportedly taken to a hospital by school authorities and later released to his parents for the holiday period. However, parents say they were not fully informed of the severity of the incident, raising questions about communication protocols and the duty of care owed to children in school custody.

The child later developed severe pain and was taken to a hospital where he died on Easter Sunday. Medical reports cited complications associated with blood clots in the neck region.

The incident has prompted renewed scrutiny of safeguarding systems within the school, with parents alleging that bullying has been a recurring issue. Some accounts suggest that similar incidents have occurred in the past, including cases where junior students were subjected to physical abuse by seniors, without adequate disciplinary action or preventive measures.

Stakeholders argue that the situation reflects a broader failure in child protection within the school, including inadequate supervision, weak reporting structures and insufficient enforcement of anti-bullying policies. Concerns have also been raised about the role of school management and the Parent-Teacher Association in addressing student welfare and maintaining a safe learning environment.

The family of the deceased has called for a government investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death, while observers emphasize the need for stronger safeguarding frameworks to prevent bullying, ensure timely intervention and protect children from harm in educational institutions.
