Eid-el-Kabir: Military Issues Terror Alert in North-East as Safety Concerns Rise for Children

As Nigerians prepare for Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, security concerns have increased in the North-East following a military warning about possible terror attacks in crowded public areas.

The warning was issued by Headquarters Joint Task Force North-East, Operation HADIN KAI. It stated that intelligence reports indicate possible attempts by Boko Haram and ISWAP to target civilians during the festive period.

Military spokesperson Lt. Col. Sani Uba said the threat could involve suicide bombers and improvised explosive devices. He warned that attackers may target markets, motor parks, prayer grounds, and other crowded locations.

Residents were advised to avoid large gatherings where possible and to consider observing Eid prayers closer to home. The military also urged increased vigilance and cooperation with security agencies during the celebrations.

From a child safeguarding perspective, the alert raises serious concerns about children’s safety during festive gatherings. Eid often involves increased movement of children between homes, prayer grounds, and public spaces.

Experts warn that crowded environments increase the risk of children getting separated from caregivers. It can also delay emergency response in the event of panic or attacks. These risks are higher in areas facing security threats.

Parents are therefore advised to closely supervise children throughout the holiday period. They should avoid taking young children to overcrowded public events where safety cannot be guaranteed.

In addition, children should be taught basic safety steps. These include staying close to trusted adults, memorising a parent’s phone number, and knowing how to respond if separated.

Security agencies have also urged the public to report suspicious activity, unattended objects, or unusual movements to the nearest security post. Cooperation during patrols and checks remains essential.

As Eid approaches, authorities say security operations will be intensified across the region. The goal is to reduce risks and protect civilians during the celebrations.

Ultimately, officials stress that while Eid-el-Kabir is a period of joy, safety and vigilance must remain a shared responsibility, especially for families with children.
