Bread scarcity hits Kaduna, Katsina, Kano

There is a severe scarcity of bread, a popular staple in Nigeria, affecting Kaduna, Katsina, and Kano States. The scarcity has driven prices up significantly, making bread as hard to find as petrol or gold. Many residents, unable to afford bread at its inflated prices, are turning to alternative foods such as noodles, millet porridge, bean cake, and bread with beans.

Due to a scarcity of wheat flour and increased costs of essential ingredients like sugar and oil, bread prices in Kaduna have risen sharply by 20 to 40 percent. Many bakers have ceased production since July 1, 2024, due to these challenges. The cost of a 50kg bag of flour has surged from N53,000-N55,000 in June to N67,000-N70,000 currently, making it difficult for bakers to maintain production without incurring losses. Shop owners and consumers are expressing strong dissatisfaction and calling for urgent intervention to address the situation.
