A study published in the British Journal of Dermatology found that British teenagers are among the most likely to have acne, ranking eighth out of 204 countries in 2021. In the UK, 14.65% of adolescents and young people were diagnosed with acne, up from 13.57% in 1990. The highest prevalence was in Germany, where nearly 15.98% were diagnosed. Other countries with higher rates than the UK include Portugal, Luxembourg, Norway, Andorra, Denmark, and San Marino. Overall, acne rates have risen in most countries since 1990, with New Zealand being the exception.
The British Association of Dermatologists (BDA) attributes the rise in acne cases to quicker access to healthcare and potential environmental or lifestyle factors. They estimate that about 95% of UK adolescents have acne when including those who self-manage. Dr. Zhou Zhu noted that acne rates have increased globally since the 1990s, possibly due to factors like diet, stress, urban pollution, and greater treatment-seeking behavior. However, even in well-served healthcare systems, cases have risen, indicating multiple contributing factors beyond just accessibility.
Prof. Michael Ardern-Jones from the BDA highlighted that the study shows an increase in doctor-diagnosed acne cases, noting it as a common reason for GP visits. While many manage acne with over-the-counter treatments, emotional support from friends, family, and health professionals is crucial, as untreated acne can negatively impact mental health and lead to permanent scarring. He emphasized the importance of timely medical advice and treatment, particularly for severe cases, to minimize these effects. Acne can vary from minor blemishes to severe cysts.
