Dolly Parton turned 79 on January 19, 2025. For nearly two decades, I have admired her unparalleled humanitarian work, and her impact has resonated deeply with me, especially in my work in Family Strengthening, Parenting, and Child Safeguarding and Protection Advocacy.
During a challenging moment in our mission to tackle the enormous barriers faced by families and children across Africa, I stumbled upon a profound quote from Dolly:
“If you want to change the world, you have to roll up your sleeves and go out there and work. We never can do enough but we can do something.”
This simple yet powerful truth brought clarity to my overwhelmed mind and reignited my determination. It reminded me that change begins with action, no matter how small. Dolly’s words have since become a treasured part of our Change Charges section on the Taiwo Akinlami Academy website, where they continue to inspire those seeking to make a difference.
Dolly’s life exemplifies the power of “doing something.” Born into a family of 12 children in the mountains of Tennessee, she rose from humble beginnings through grit, faith, and an unwavering commitment to her dreams. Her contributions extend far beyond music. She is a disruptor, a compassionate visionary, and a champion for families and children worldwide.
The Imagination Library, launched in 1995 to honor her father who couldn’t read, is one of her greatest legacies. What began as a local effort in Sevier County, Tennessee, has blossomed into a global initiative, mailing free books to millions of children from birth to age five. This revolutionary program transforms literacy barriers into bridges of opportunity, creating a brighter future for families and communities.
In our work, we often reflect on Dolly as a disruptor, not one who creates chaos, but one who challenges the status quo to effect meaningful change. She teaches us the value of raising bold dreamers, compassionate leaders, and determined change-makers.
