Google to Disable AI Tools for Schoolchildren Amid Growing Safety Concerns

Google has announced plans to disable its artificial intelligence tools by default for schoolchildren, following concerns about their impact on learning, critical thinking and children’s digital safety.

The decision, announced on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, will affect kindergarten to Grade 12 (K–12) student accounts worldwide.

Under the proposed changes, Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search will remain disabled until school administrators explicitly authorise access.

The rollout is expected to begin in the United States in 2027 before expanding globally.

However, the decision presents a challenge for schools seeking to restrict AI while retaining access to Google Search.

According to Google’s Vice President for Education, Chris Phillips, AI features are deeply integrated into the search engine, making it impossible for schools to provide Google Search without its AI capabilities.

The announcement follows criticism from educators, parents and policymakers concerned that unrestricted AI access could encourage academic dishonesty, reduce independent thinking and expose children to inappropriate technological influences.

In August, Google introduced Gemini features to students through Classroom, offering personalised learning assistance, quizzes and study materials.

The company’s growing influence in education has also raised questions about children’s privacy and schools’ authority over classroom technology.

Google maintains that the revised policy will give educational institutions greater control over how students access AI-powered learning tools.

For child safeguarding advocates, the development reinforces the importance of age-appropriate digital safeguards, parental involvement and teacher supervision in protecting children’s educational development and well-being.
