Tina Jin, a 13-year-old student from San Jose, California, won first place at the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge (Thermo Fisher JIC), the premier middle school STEM competition, and took home a $25,000 prize. Jin was one of 30 finalists selected from nearly 2,000 applicants across the U.S. and territories. Her winning project focused on using animal bones to filter drinking water, showcasing her expertise in science, technology, engineering, and math. Jin also earned the ASCEND award for her innovation and teamwork. She plans to refine her filter design, improve its flow rate, and collaborate with organizations to provide clean water solutions for underserved communities globally. Inspired by Albert Einstein, Jin is committed to continuing her research and making a positive impact.
