Keegan Lee, a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, recognized her addiction to social media during 10th grade, spending about six hours daily on platforms like Snapchat and TikTok. To break free, she decided to quit her phone for a week, discovering the joys of real-life connections, reading, and handwritten letters. This positive experience led her to remain offline for an additional 60 days, during which she documented her journey and co-authored a book, 60 Days of Disconnect, with psychologist Bilal Ghandour. Now, as a youth council member for Mental Health America and director of the Log Off Movement, Lee educates others about the impacts of social media on mental health. She emphasizes the importance of face-to-face interactions over digital ones, noting that genuine connections provide a deeper sense of fulfillment.
