February 27 2024- Health workers, officials, and humanitarians from 15 French-speaking sub-Saharan countries gathered in Douala, Cameroon, to discuss chronic child malnutrition in the region. Many affected children have been displaced from conflict-ridden countries like Sudan, and their malnutrition is exacerbated by climate shocks leading to food and water scarcity in sub-Saharan Africa. UNICEF’s regional nutrition adviser for West and Central Africa, Simeon Nanama, expressed concern about several million children at risk of dying from acute malnutrition in the region. The meeting aimed to address the urgent need to save lives and provide assistance to around 7 million children affected by acute malnutrition.
