Chicago Public Schools leaders want to move away from school choice

January 24 2024- Chicago school leaders are considering a shift away from the current school choice system, where families can apply to various programs including charter, magnet, and test-in schools. The Board of Education is set to vote on this resolution, aligning with Mayor Brandon Johnson’s promise to revitalize neighborhood schools. Johnson has criticized the existing school choice system, likening it to a “Hunger Games scenario” that fosters competition for resources. The proposed change aims to prioritize fully-resourced neighborhood schools, particularly in communities affected by structural racism, past inequitable policies, and disinvestment, according to the released resolution.
