Cheri Marler, 53, of Kemmerer, Wyoming, was found guilty of first-degree murder and child abuse in the death of 5-year-old Annabelle Noles, whom she was babysitting. Initially claiming Annabelle fell down stairs, Marler later admitted to hitting the child multiple times in a clapping motion, causing fatal injuries including a broken back, brain bleeding, and extensive bruising. Annabelle died the day after the incident, and Marler faces life in prison without parole pending sentencing. Her attorney did not respond to requests for comment from PEOPLE magazine.
