Educators, Parents Weigh in on Virginia’s Proposed Cell-Phone Free Classrooms

In Virginia Beach, a meeting at Tallwood High School focused on Governor Glenn Youngkin’s Executive Order 33, which aims to implement cell phone-free education in Virginia’s K-12 public schools. The order seeks to address health and safety concerns by establishing policies to limit cell phone use in classrooms. Opinions are divided; some, like teacher Sarah Dicalogero, support restricting phone use but question the feasibility of removing them entirely. Suggestions included providing designated storage for phones in classrooms. Virginia’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, Lisa Coons, acknowledged the challenges and is working on guidance, with a draft expected by August 15. Feedback will be collected through September, aiming for the policy to be in effect by January 1.
