In response to the growing threat of school shootings, Missy Anderson, a Pediatric Trauma Program Manager at Denver Health, has begun teaching emergency first aid to children. Anderson, who has trained thousands of adults in the Stop the Bleed program since 2016, started instructing kids ages 5-13 in 2018 due to increasing requests from schools and organizations. The program teaches children how to handle severe bleeding by applying pressure and using tourniquets. This initiative reflects the grim reality of gun violence in schools, which has become a leading cause of death among U.S. children.
