Pelham City Schools Increase Special Education Teacher Salaries

< 1 min read

Pelham City Schools has approved a salary increase for special education teachers, adding $2,400 to each teacher’s annual pay. This raise is in addition to a $1,200 bonus recently provided by the Alabama State Department of Education. The decision aims to address a shortage of special education teachers in the state, which numbered 300 as of fall 2022. Superintendent Dr. Chuck Ledbetter believes the pay raise will enhance competitiveness and help retain teachers who play a crucial role in supporting students with special needs. The district has also introduced an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) specialist position with a $5,000 annual stipend and implemented measures such as providing half-day substitutes monthly to assist teachers in managing administrative tasks.
