Court Temporarily Blocks Trump Order on Birthright Citizenship

A federal judge has temporarily blocked President Trump’s controversial executive order aimed at ending birthright citizenship for children born to many migrants in the U.S.
The order, which sought to redefine citizenship based on the immigration status of parents, has faced widespread criticism for directly contradicting the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The amendment guarantees citizenship to all individuals born in the United States.
Legal challenges quickly followed, with 22 states and civil rights organizations filing lawsuits against the administration. U.S. District Court Judge John Coughenour, a Reagan appointee, granted a temporary block at the request of Washington state and three others.
“This is a blatantly unconstitutional order,” Judge Coughenour stated in court, emphasizing that in his four decades on the bench, he had rarely encountered a more clear-cut case of constitutional violation.
The temporary block delays implementation of the order for 14 days, offering a legal reprieve to opponents as the battle over birthright citizenship continues. This ruling marks a significant early victory for states and civil rights advocates opposing the executive order.
