Children in Conflict with the Law

UK-Based Nigerian Teen Jailed for Life After Snapchat Dispute Turns Deadly

A child in conflict with the law has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 28 years by a court in the United Kingdom for the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old following a dispute that reportedly began in a Snapchat group chat.

The teenager and an accomplice were convicted after the victim was shot during a drive-by attack in Enfield, London, on June 26, 2025.

According to the London Metropolitan Police, the pair allegedly tracked the victim on an electric bike before carrying out the shooting. Both were sentenced to life imprisonment and must each serve a minimum of 28 years before becoming eligible for parole.

From a child protection perspective, the case highlights the serious consequences of youth violence and the dangers of unresolved conflicts on social media. It also underscores the importance of protecting children from influences that may lead them into violent or criminal behaviour.

Child protection advocates say children in conflict with the law require age-appropriate justice, alongside rehabilitation and opportunities for reintegration into society. They also stress the need for early intervention, family support, digital safety education and conflict resolution programmes to prevent online disagreements from escalating into acts of violence.

The case serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of youth violence on families and communities, and the importance of safeguarding children through prevention, guidance and timely support.
