Massachusetts Teen Accused of Killing Mother and Brother Had Used ChatGPT to Create Family Murder Stories

A 17-year-old Massachusetts boy is in conflict with the law following the deaths of his mother and 14-year-old brother, after prosecutors said he had used ChatGPT to create fantasy stories about the killing of his family.
Arjun Aravind is facing allegations over the deaths of his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and his younger brother, Siddharth Aravind, 14, who were found dead inside their home in Acton, Massachusetts.
Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said investigators discovered that Aravind had recently used the internet and ChatGPT to explore “theoretical ideas or fantasy stories” involving the killing of his family.
According to Ryan, the teenager created Gothic-style stories, developed characters and asked hypothetical questions about situations involving his family members. Some of the material appeared to relate to threats that his relatives would not survive.
Police reports cited by local media also indicated that Aravind had experienced behavioural difficulties during the previous year. His father reportedly told investigators that the family had hidden knives from him because of concerns about his behaviour.
Authorities found the mother and son at the family home after a tutor arrived for a scheduled visit and could not gain entry. Aravind was later located in his mother’s vehicle in a neighbouring community.
The teenager has pleaded not guilty and was ordered to remain in custody without bail while undergoing a mental health evaluation. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for September 11.
From a child protection perspective, the case raises difficult questions about how families, schools and digital platforms can identify warning signs and provide timely support to children experiencing serious behavioural or emotional difficulties.
It also highlights the importance of creating safer digital environments for young people, particularly when online activity may reflect distress, harmful thoughts or potential risks to themselves or others.
