Nigerian Teen in Conflict With the Law After Snapchat Dispute Led to UK Boy’s Death — Police

A Nigerian teenager in the United Kingdom is in conflict with the law after police said a dispute that started in a Snapchat group chat escalated into the death of an 18-year-old young person, raising concerns about the dangers of online conflicts among children and young people.

The London Metropolitan Police said Emmanuel Popoola, 18, and other young people were found responsible by a court following the death of Keanu Harker, who was fatally injured while riding his bicycle along Great Cambridge Road, Enfield, in June 2025.

According to police, digital evidence from mobile devices showed that the disagreement began in a Snapchat group chat involving rival groups in the Enfield area. Investigators said Popoola became angry after comments were made about his inability to afford mobile data.

Police alleged that the online disagreement later escalated into real-world violence, resulting in Harker’s death.

The case has renewed discussions about the need to protect children and young people from harmful online interactions, peer pressure and exposure to violence. Child protection advocates warn that social media conflicts can quickly intensify when young people lack the support and guidance needed to manage disagreements safely.

Experts say children navigating online spaces need stronger digital safety education, responsible use of technology and early intervention when they experience bullying, threats or harmful influences.

Following the incident, police said those involved attempted to leave the UK and dispose of evidence before being located through investigations involving UK and French authorities.

Harker’s family described the loss as devastating and urged communities to address the growing influence of gang culture and violence among young people.

The Metropolitan Police said the investigation highlighted the need to understand how online disputes can move beyond digital platforms and create serious risks for young people’s safety and wellbeing.
