The young boy who rose to prominence as the campaign poster child for Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has made a public appeal for help, expressing his desire to return to school.

In a video shared by Politics Nigeria, the teenager pleaded with kind-hearted Nigerians to support his mother, a struggling petty trader, so she can take care of him and his siblings. According to him, life has been difficult, and his mother currently has no stable means of income. “I want to go to school… people should help my mother because she doesn’t have anything she’s doing… please, if anybody can help us, we’d appreciate it,” he said.

His appeal comes just hours after he was released from detention in Kirikiri prison, where he had been incarcerated following what his lawyer described as a false accusation. The affected child was allegedly set up by some local touts who were angered that he did not share the donations he received from Peter Obi and his supporters after his image went viral during the campaign.

Speaking on the case, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who secured his release, disclosed that the boy and his family are no longer safe in their Amukoko residence in Lagos due to ongoing threats. As a result, they have been temporarily relocated to a hotel for their safety.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Effiong called on well-meaning individuals, organizations, and corporate bodies to assist financially. He said the funds would be used not only for relocation but also to support the boy’s education and overall well-being. The appeal also noted that the boy’s father is deceased and his mother is left to care for the family alone.

Effiong further revealed that the boy expressed a strong desire to go back to school and is also open to acquiring a skill. He assured the public that any donations made would be properly managed to avoid past issues of misappropriation.
