Kano: School Closed, Teacher Arrested Over Alleged Abuse of Children

Authorities in Ungogo Local Government Area have shut down Al-Hadeed Private School indefinitely after allegations of sexual abuse involving four children. The case has raised serious concerns about child safety in schools.
The Local Government Chairman, Tijjani Amiru Bilyaminu, ordered the closure while investigations continue. He said the action is necessary to protect the children and ensure justice is served.
The teacher, identified as “Uncle Kamal,” was arraigned before a magistrate’s court on Monday. The court ordered his remand in a correctional facility.
Prosecutors told the court that medical examinations confirmed the children were sexually abused. The affected persons include three seven-year-old siblings and their five-year-old sister.
They were identified as Hassana, Hussaina, Gambo, and their younger sibling. All of them attended the same school where the teacher worked.
The case has been adjourned to June 6 for further hearing.
Chairman Bilyaminu said the local government will not tolerate any abuse of children’s rights. He added that offenders will face the full weight of the law.
“The rights of children must always be protected,” he said. “Anyone who violates them will be held accountable.”
He also explained that shutting down the school helps protect the ongoing investigation. In addition, it prevents interference with the case.
Child protection advocates have welcomed the quick response from authorities. They say schools must remain safe spaces for children.
However, they warn that the case shows the need for stronger safeguarding systems. Background checks for school staff are also essential.
Experts also want safer reporting systems for children and parents. They say this will help report abuse without fear.
Parents in the area have expressed shock over the incident. Many are now calling for tighter regulation of schools.
Finally, authorities say the school will remain closed until investigations are completed. They also promised stronger efforts to improve child safety in schools across Kano State.
