How Well Do Parents Know Those Entrusted with Their Children?
Alleged Poisoning of Two-Year-Old by Lagos Housemaid Sparks Reactions Among Nigerians

A two-year-old boy in Lagos State has reportedly returned to school safely after his teacher discovered a suspicious substance in his lunch, following allegations that the family’s newly employed housemaid had added rat poison to his food and a pot of stew prepared for the household.
The incident attracted public attention on 24 October 2026 after a video circulated online showing the domestic worker being questioned over the alleged contamination.
According to reports by Pulse Nigeria and Schools Voice, the child’s teacher, Victoria Sofoluwe of Chresol Schools in Ojodu, Lagos, became suspicious while transferring noodles from his lunch flask onto a plate.
She reportedly noticed an unusual substance at the bottom of the flask and immediately contacted the child’s mother before he could consume the meal.
The mother subsequently questioned the housemaid, who was accused of adding rat poison to the child’s lunch and the family’s stew.
In a video reportedly shared on Chresol Schools’ Facebook page, Sofoluwe disclosed that the child was safe and had returned to school. She also indicated that his parents were unharmed.
Schools Voice reported on 27 October that the teacher said the housemaid had been arrested, while MicroSecondNews reported on 29 October that she had been handed over to the police.
However, no independently verified police statement or laboratory findings have established the substance’s identity or confirmed the allegations.
Nigerians React, Question Caregiver Safety and Parental Responsibility
The allegations have generated reactions online, with Nigerians expressing concerns about children’s safety, parental supervision and the responsibilities of domestic caregivers.
Reacting on Nairaland on 25 October, a user identified as We4all questioned why the child’s parents had not checked his meal before he left for school.
Another commenter, Jennyclay, praised the teacher for noticing the suspicious substance but challenged attempts to place responsibility solely on the child’s mother, arguing that fathers also have a role in preparing meals and safeguarding children.
However, not everyone accepted the poisoning allegation without further evidence.
On 26 October, a user identified as franksam209 questioned whether laboratory tests or other evidence had established that the substance was poisonous, warning against condemning the domestic worker before the facts were confirmed.
The differing reactions reflect concerns about how families supervise caregivers, share parental responsibilities and respond to suspected threats against children.
Child Safeguarding Begins at Home
Beyond the allegations, the incident raises questions about the safety of children entrusted to domestic workers and other caregivers.
For parents who depend on caregivers while attending to work and other responsibilities, the case underscores the importance of reasonable background checks, clear safeguarding expectations and continued supervision.
Such precautions should be shared responsibilities rather than obligations placed exclusively on mothers. Parents also need to establish communication with schools and remain attentive to changes in their children’s behaviour, feeding routines and general welfare.
The teacher’s reported intervention demonstrates how school personnel can help identify potential dangers that might otherwise go unnoticed.
While the allegations require professional investigation, the incident reinforces the importance of cooperation between parents, caregivers and educators in protecting children from harm.
