UNC System Approves Van Noort’s plan to Discontinue Four Academic Departments, and cut Others, at UNCA

< 1 min read

The UNC System Board of Governors approved UNC Asheville Chancellor Kimberly van Noort’s proposal to eliminate several academic programs, including drama, philosophy, religion, and classics (ancient Mediterranean studies), and to reduce offerings in languages and literature. This decision aims to address a budget deficit exacerbated by a significant enrollment decline of 25% over the past decade. The board also announced a new “guaranteed admissions” program for six campuses, including UNC Asheville, aimed at increasing enrollment. Current students in affected programs will be able to complete their degrees, but these programs will no longer be available to new students.
