UNICEF Calls for Global Action to Protect Children from Rising Crises in 2025

The world is entering an alarming rise in crises that can impact children and threaten their lives and future. According to UNICEF’s latest report, Prospects for Children 2025: Building Resilient Systems for Children’s Futures, climate change, growing inequality, and escalating conflicts are disrupting childhoods on an unprecedented scale.
One of the most alarming trends highlighted in the report is the doubling of children living in conflict zones. Today, over 473 million children, more than one in six globally, reside in areas plagued by armed conflict. This is a drastic increase from the 1990s when around 10 percent of children lived in such conditions. The world is now experiencing its highest number of armed conflicts since World War II.
The situation is worsened by the weakening of international protections. Both state and non-state actors are increasingly violating international laws designed to protect civilians, with schools, hospitals, and other essential infrastructure becoming frequent targets. This unraveling of decades of progress is taking a devastating toll on children, who face displacement, starvation, disease, and severe psychological trauma.
UNICEF warns that without a concerted effort, these trends will continue to worsen. The report calls for strengthening national systems that can support children in times of crisis and investing in resilience-building measures to protect their future. It also emphasizes the importance of restoring the effectiveness of multilateral institutions to reverse the losses of recent years.
The global community must act decisively to shield children from the growing threats they face and ensure they have the chance to grow and thrive in a safer, more equitable world.
