Police Officer, Two Others Arrested in Niger State Over Sexual Abuse of 13-Year-Old Girl

A police officer and two other suspects have been arrested in Niger State over allegations of child sexual abuse involving a 13-year-old girl.
The Niger State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Hadiza Kuta, confirmed the arrests during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Monday.
She said the three suspects were accused of repeatedly abusing the child before the matter was reported to the ministry.
According to Kuta, the child’s parents contacted the ministry after their attempts to seek justice faced challenges. Their complaint led to the arrest of the suspects.
The commissioner expressed concern over increasing cases of sexual abuse involving children and teenagers. She also criticised attempts to shift attention away from the allegations by making claims against the child.
Kuta explained that the suspects allegedly gained access to the child after buying chickens from her. She warned about the risks children, especially girls involved in street trading, may face.
She also raised concerns about suspects in child abuse cases being granted bail shortly after appearing in court. According to her, such actions can discourage families from seeking justice.
The commissioner noted that abuse cases often leave children with serious emotional and psychological effects. She said such experiences can affect their education and future opportunities.
Kuta assured the child’s family that the ministry would support them throughout the process. She revealed that the child had been moved from her community and placed under protective care.
She added that the child would receive medical attention, counselling and psychological support to help her recover.
The ministry said it would continue working with relevant authorities to ensure a proper investigation and protect children’s rights.
