Anambra Couple Remanded as Abused 10-Year-Old Fights for Life in Hospital

The Anambra State Police Command has secured the remand of a couple, Chukwudi Chukwuyere, 40, and Chisom Chukwuyere, 30, over alleged abuse of a 10-year-old boy under their care. The case has raised renewed concern about child protection and safeguarding in the state.
The 10-year-old boy is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital under state protection. Doctors report that he is recovering steadily from severe injuries.
A viral video showing the child with extensive burns and visible injuries sparked public outrage on social media. The footage triggered swift intervention from authorities and child protection agencies.
Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the suspects were arraigned in court after preliminary investigations were concluded. He said they have been remanded in a correctional centre pending further proceedings.
According to him, the case followed reports and video evidence that drew widespread attention and prompted immediate rescue action.
Authorities praised residents for providing timely information that led to the child’s rescue. They also acknowledged the role of community vigilance in preventing further harm.
Child welfare officials have continued to monitor the boy’s recovery, ensuring he receives both medical care and psychosocial support. Protection services remain engaged to safeguard his well-being during recovery.
Meanwhile, Anambra State First Lady, Nonye Soludo, visited the child in hospital and expressed satisfaction with his progress. She commended the medical team for their care and support.
She also highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in protecting children from abuse and neglect.
The police say investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be communicated as the case progresses. Authorities stress that safeguarding children remains a priority across the state.
