Oyo School Abduction: Three Men Sentenced to Life Imprisonment Over Kidnapped Children, Teachers
The three men involved in the kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State, have been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
The defendants Abdulrazak Umar, Yunusa Musa and Shamsu Adamu Sani were found guilty of terrorism-related offences, including membership of the proscribed Ansaru terrorist group affiliate, Darul Salam.
The three men were also found guilty of failing to disclose details of the planning and execution of the kidnapping of schoolchildren and teachers, and other offences related to the terrorist activities.
The defendants were charged by the Department of State Services (DSS) under a 10-count charge of offences of kidnapping, concealment of information, incitement and offences relating to terrorism under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The sentencing is a positive move towards holding the perpetrators accountable from a child protection point of view, as it affected children, teachers and families in Oyo State.
The abduction underscored the fragility of schools and the need for greater protection to ensure that children have access to education in safe environments.
The case has also reignited concerns for the continued protection of schools, better security coordination and assistance for children impacted by violence.
The sentencing follows two days after the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced two top Ansaru commanders to life imprisonment.
