Kano Opens Investigation Into Mysterious Death of Boarding School Student

The Kano State Government has constituted an administrative investigative committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the death of a student of St. Louis College, Kano. The move follows growing concern over safety and welfare in boarding schools.

Governor Abba Yusuf approved the panel to ensure a thorough and independent review of the incident. Authorities say the process will focus on child protection, accountability, and safeguarding standards within schools.

The committee will be chaired by the Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Ali Makoda. Members include senior government officials, education administrators, and representatives of private school proprietors.

Other members are the Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters, the Executive Secretary of the Private and Voluntary Institutions Management Board, and the Director-General of Media and Publicity. The PTA chairman of St. Louis College and the Senior Special Assistant on Girl Child Education are also part of the panel.

Officials explained that the committee will investigate the events leading to the student’s death and review school records. It will also assess supervision practices, welfare systems, and institutional procedures.

In addition, the panel will examine allegations of bullying, coercion, or improper disciplinary actions. It will also review how complaints are handled within the school system.

The terms of reference include evaluating emergency medical response systems and identifying gaps in student safety measures. Recommendations are expected to strengthen safeguarding practices across boarding schools in the state.

Governor Yusuf directed the committee to work with fairness and professionalism. He also urged members to ensure a transparent process that prioritizes student welfare.

The committee is expected to submit its findings within a set timeframe. Authorities say the goal is to prevent similar incidents and improve protection systems for students in boarding schools across Kano State.
