41-Year-Old Man Jailed for Life for Sexual Abuse of 11-Year-Old Girl

A Family Court sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, has sentenced a 41-year-old man, Endurance Ime Sandy, to life imprisonment for the sexual abuse of an 11-year-old girl.
The court delivered its judgment on Wednesday after a trial that lasted several months. Justice Blessing Obin Egwu ruled that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Consequently, the court found the defendant guilty and imposed the maximum sentence under the law. The judge stressed that the punishment should serve as a warning to those who target children.
In addition, the court emphasised that child protection remains a key responsibility of the justice system. It noted that children must be safeguarded from all forms of exploitation and harm.
Child rights advocates and security agencies followed the case closely. They supported the investigation and described the ruling as a step toward stronger accountability.
Barrister James Ibor, Principal Partner at Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, commended the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade in Calabar, the Cross River State Police Command, and the Attorney General’s office for their roles.
He also acknowledged legal practitioners and officials who supported the child during the proceedings. Their cooperation, he said, helped ensure a fair and effective justice process.
Furthermore, he noted that the state government continues to show commitment to child safety. This includes efforts to strengthen protection systems and prevent abuse.
Overall, the judgment reinforces ongoing efforts to improve child protection. It also encourages the reporting of all forms of child sexual abuse across society.
