March 2 2024- Parents of elementary-age children in Durham Public Schools are expressing concern over the district’s decision to transition its popular after-school care program to a lottery system for slot allocation. The change means that securing a spot in the program is no longer guaranteed. The district explained in an email to parents that the new lottery system, a random selection process, aims to provide “more equitable” access to the after-school care program due to high demand. However, some parents, like Katherine Goldstein, fear their children may not secure a spot through this system, causing stress and uncertainty. The announcement followed a recent DPS Board of Education decision related to a pay dispute for classified workers.
