February 27 2024- Karen Carey, a Black woman and assistant principal at South High School, has filed a federal lawsuit against South High School principal Christy Nickerson, assistant principal Bao Lam, and Columbus City Schools. The lawsuit alleges racial discrimination and retaliation over several years. Carey claims that she experienced discrimination based on her race and faced retaliation when she spoke out against it. The lawsuit also names the Board of Education, Superintendent Angela Chapman, and Regional Superintendent Sandy Womack as defendants. Columbus City Schools stated that they had not been served with the lawsuit as of Monday afternoon and, therefore, could not provide a comment.
