According to a University of Michigan survey of 2,044 parents with children under 18, about half of mothers and one-third of fathers are making New Year’s resolutions related to parenting. One common goal, shared by 47% of parents, is to be more consistent with discipline. Additionally, 78% of parents aim to enhance their patience in 2024.
For those struggling with enforcing rules with their children, child psychologist Mona Delahooke suggests trying “responsive parenting,” which blends gentle parenting with a traditional, authoritative approach. Delahooke emphasizes the importance of considering what each child needs in the moment, rather than strictly adhering to specific parenting styles.
She advocates for a balanced approach that combines structure and empathy, allowing parents to set firm boundaries while also acknowledging their child’s emotions. Delahooke stresses that kindness and firmness are not mutually exclusive and can be effectively integrated in parenting.
