February 26 2024- The City of Jackson is grappling with the issue of abandoned buildings and properties, with the potential addition of 20 closed schools owned by the Jackson Public School District. To address this, JPS has established a Facilities Repurposing Advisory Committee to explore the optimal ways these schools can be repurposed for future community use. The school board voted 5-1 to close 11 schools, merging two, as part of the district’s optimization plan presented by Superintendent Errick Greene in October 2023. The closures aim to address challenges and enhance efficiency within the school district.
