Sweden has introduced a pioneering law allowing grandparents to receive paid parental leave for up to three months while caring for their grandchildren during the child’s first year. The legislation, approved by Sweden’s parliament last December, allows parents to transfer a portion of their parental leave to grandparents. Couples can transfer up to 45 days and single parents up to 90 days. This move builds on Sweden’s longstanding commitment to comprehensive social welfare, which includes generous parental benefits extending up to 480 days per child, with most of the compensation based on full income. Unlike the United States, where federal paid parental leave is absent, Sweden’s new law reflects a broader societal support system that extends benefits to various family structures beyond the nuclear family.
