February 16 2024- Maudy Adkinson Johnson recalls attending the Lee-Buckner School, a one-room schoolhouse in Spring Hill, Tennessee, during the 1950s. Despite segregation, Johnson and her fellow Black classmates focused on education and building a sense of community, without questioning the racial differences. Unbeknownst to them, the school was part of the Rosenwald Schools project, initiated by philanthropist Julius Rosenwald and Booker T. Washington to provide education to Black children in the rural South during the era of segregation. The project led to the construction of over 5,000 schools, impacting the lives of countless Black students.
