A Kentucky family reports that their 9-year-old daughter, Lucy Nash, has been declared brain dead after collapsing during recess on her first day of fourth grade at Cairo Elementary on August 7. Lucy suffered a cardiac event, causing her brain to go without oxygen for several minutes. She was initially treated at a local hospital and then transferred to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. Despite efforts to save her, Lucy’s brain death was confirmed after a prolonged period of monitoring. The community has rallied around Lucy with a “Pinkies up 4 Lucy” campaign, honoring her love for painting her nails pink. Her family is preparing her body for organ donation to help others.
