11-Year-Old Girl ‘Mistakenly’ Lights Illegal Explosive, Loses Hand and Forearm

An 11-year-old girl in River Rouge, Michigan, suffered severe injuries when an illegal explosive device she mistakenly lit exploded in her home. Initially thought to be a firework, the device led to the amputation of Caitlyn’s right hand and forearm. Her twin sister, who was present, sustained minor injuries. The incident occurred despite efforts to extinguish the device in a bathroom sink. Caitlyn’s family and community members provided immediate aid, including applying a tourniquet to stop bleeding. Caitlyn has undergone surgery and been released from the hospital, with her family supporting her through the recovery process.
