New federal data reveals that a majority of public K–12 schools nationwide, including those in Indiana, faced challenges in hiring fully certified teachers heading into the 2024-25 school year. According to a survey by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), nearly 75% of schools struggled to fill one or more teaching vacancies, with one-fifth of teacher positions still unfilled at the start of the year. In Indiana, more than 1,300 educator jobs were listed on the state’s Department of Education job board, a notable decrease from over 2,200 vacancies in June and 4,200 openings in 2022, shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic.
